Today we will talk about the most important tool for an electronics engineer “A Circuit Simulator”. Before fabricating a particular circuit, it is customary to simulate the circuit on any EDA Software. However, when we start thinking for one, the first question comes to our mind is Which EDA Software will be helpful to accomplish this job? The answer to this question may vary for circuit-to-circuit and different software and different capabilities which no one can deny. So here, I will tell you some of the key difference between top Circuit Simulators (Analog + Digital) available in the market. #4 TINA-TI

TINA-TI provides all the conventional DC, transient and frequency domain analysis of SPICE and much more. TINA has extensive post-processing capability that allows you to format results the way you want them. Virtual instruments allow you to select input waveforms and probe circuit nodes voltages and waveforms. It supports AC, Transient, DC analysis, some Fourier analyses and a couple of steady-state analyses. TINA’s schematic capture is truly intuitive – a real “quick start.” TINA is a product of Design Soft exclusively for Texas Instruments.

TINA-TI is available for Windows XP, 7, 8 and 10. No availability for Linux users. This complimentary version is fully functional but does not support some other features available with the full version of TINA. Digital circuit’s simulation is not available in free version of the software.

#3 LT SPICE

LTspice is a high-performance SPICE simulator, schematic capture and waveform viewer with enhancements and models for easing the simulation of switching regulators. Our enhancements to SPICE have made simulating switching regulators extremely fast compared to normal SPICE simulators, allowing the user to view waveforms for most switching regulators in just a few minutes. Included in this download are LTspice, Macro Models for the majority of Linear Technology’s switching regulators, over 200 op amp models, as well as resistors, transistors, and MOSFET models.

LTspice is available for Windows 7, 8, and 10. Support for Windows XP version has ended and will no longer be updated. It provides free usage of circuit simulator i.e. you will get all the features for free.

It also provides PCB Design and Fabrication feature with 3D view capability. Multisim is also available for students (Student Edition).

Multisim also provides Multisim Live, which is a web-based electronic schematic capture and simulation tool with built-in SPICE, a based analog simulation that allows users to capture and simulate designs using 200 different components, anywhere with an Internet connection. Multisim is currently working on Windows but Linux or MAC users can use Multisim Live. You can download a trail version or student edition with some limitations.

#1 CADENCE ORCAD PSPICE

Cadence acquired the PSPICE tool that was originally developed by Microsim. Cadence provides the OrCAD Capture and PSpice circuit simulation tool as a bundle with many useful packages that are highly helpful in circuit simulation and model creations. OrCAD PSpice and Advanced Analysis technology combine industry-leading, native analog, mixed-signal, and analysis engines to deliver a complete circuit simulation and verification solution. You can use them for either prototyping simple circuits, designing complex systems, or validating component yield and reliability. OrCAD PSpice technology provides the best, high-performance circuit simulation to analyze and refine your circuits, components, and parameters before committing to layout and fabrication.

Cadence ORCAD PSPICE is highly useful and used by many students and researchers. The bundle provided by CADENCE also contains PCB Designer, PCB Editor, PCB Router, Circuit Simulator, and Model Creator etc…

You can run PSpice on Windows and Linux both. Pspice is a paid software. You can start a Lite version which will run for an indefinite time with some limitation on circuit size and all.(Should buy Full Version – Recommended)

I have used every software listed above. Being a Windows User, I personally recommend Cadence PSPICE over all the other software because it has both features and great community over the web. Multisim provides you a great platform to simulate circuits and PCB Fabrication but is not used by many researchers for Circuit Simulation. It will be a good alternative to Cadence PSPICE if you are a student. Multisim ranked second because we cannot simulate circuits by writing SPICE code directly, which is a great advantage in Cadence PSPICE. Rest Simulators are also good but for small circuits and lack of many features which do the first two provide.
